Breakfast served up with a scoop of truth! The song tells the tale, just as it happened -- thanks to Jan Glidewell! If you’re passing by Dade City, y’all stop in at Tami’s and tell ‘em we sent ya! ACW: Guitar and vocals • Ron Litschauer: Bass, Mandolin • Bari Litschauer: Banjo
On our way to Willfest, we turned off the beaten track
Lookin' for a homemade biscuit and a cup of coffee strong and black
Betty took us Tami's in Dade City, took a table near the door
We were only there for breakfast but we got a whole lot more
The waitress said, "Hi there, I'm Jane," her belly about 6 months on
She looked so young we said, "This your first?" and she said, "Nope, got three boys home"
We wondered at her energy as she wrote down our biscuits and eggs
And whirled to tend her tables makin' sure everybody gets fed
In a minute or two our breakfast came, taters, eggs and steaming bread
But there in the place where the butter should be was a tub of stuff called "spread"
My beloved called out, "'Scuse me, Jane, can have real butter please
"Can't imagine puttin' this man-made stuff on biscuits good as these."
But Jane said, "Spread is all we got," and swept her hair out of her face
While my beloved cried, "What do you mean, I thought this was a country place!"
"You're absolutely right," Jane said, "This is a country place,
"Country people don't ask questions. They just eat what's on their plate."
Eat what's on your plate, don't ask questions and don't complain
Even if it's broccoli and brussels sprouts, just smile and dive right in
God made the food and God made the cook so don't be impolite
Just eat what's set before you, and say thanks for every bite
Knowing we'd been proper told, we put that spread to use
'Cause there's nothin' like country breakfast served up with a dollop of truth
Sometimes life gives you butter, sometimes it's a tub of Parkay
Sometimes you don't ask questions you just eat what's on your plate
Eat what's on your plate, don't ask questions and don't complain
Even if it's broccoli brussels sprouts, just smile and dive right in
God made the food and God made the cook so don't be impolite
Just eat what's set before you, and say thanks for every bite
Six months later in Dade City, Glidewell took us for a bite
We had a hankerin' for country breakfast and we knew Tammi's does it right
So we ordered up grits and biscuits and what did we behold
But right there on the table, real butter in the bowl
So if you think you can't change the world in way mighty and profound
Just try askin' for what you really want and it just might come around
When you want a homemade biscuit served with butter or parkay
A dose of truth, a touch of love and a good laugh along the way
Just stop off in Dade City, cause Tammi's got it all
And if you're looking for good company, give Betty and Jan a call
